What Do a GPS Unit and a Rubbermaid Container Have
to Do with Evangelism?
“The realm of God is like a
hidden cache.” Matt. 13:44
Hidden on the campus of West Hills Covenant Church in Portland, Oregon, is
a Rubbermaid container filled with tradable objects and a logbook. Seventh
and eighth grade students from the church placed the cache as a
destination for Global Positioning Systems adventurers. The students
recognized that the seclusion of the campus—while great for retreat and
renewal—also made it hard for new people to find the church. The fun,
practical and evangelistic remedy was to set up a geocache and post the
site online. Response to the posting was immediate. The very next day, the
first guest to the cache recorded his visit online: “Saw this one pop up
on my closest-to-home list this morning, so I made a little detour on my
way to work. Neat spot. Thanks for a fun hunt!” The students are hoping
the cache will attract others with an adventurous spirit and let them know
that there is a church “back there” in the hills of west Portland. If
you are interested in the “West Hills Crossing” geocache site, go to
www.geocaching.com and enter zip
code 97221. Or, punch-in 45° 29.065 W 122° 44.175 directly into your GPS
unit and see what treasure awaits you. Reimbursements
If you have an expense that you need reimbursement for, please make sure you have a receipt and fill out a check request
form. Requests for over $100 must be authorized. Please contact the office for more info.
